ISP MAASTRICHT WORKSHOP „CREATIVE DESTRUCTION”
ABSTRACT
In an experimental setting this workshop explores how and challenges to make individual artistic choices within a given musical and textual context. The participants are divided into three groups, all groups (in this case) are given the same musical material: „Ich grolle nicht” by Robert Schumann.
The 3 major steps of the process are described as
- SAFARI
Analysis of the existing material: Which artistic tools are used? Who is the musical language? Translate the text, explore emotional content: What is there? Who is there for ME?
- CREATIVE DESTRUCTION
Decomposition of the existing material: disconnect tools from content and style. Create new context by leaving the common tonality: Mix and disturb tonalities. Reshape by disturbing existing rhythmical patterns and exploring diverse rhythmic tools. Translate, transcribe, rewrite Heine’s original text: Twist, tweak, use of onomatopoeia. Add/ exchange accompanying instruments.
- PHOENIX
Resynthesis: Creation of Countermaterial out of the debree of previous destruction. „Birth” of a spontaneous, individual version within a performance using tools of choice.
